As a driving instructor, you won’t have a boss telling you what to do. You’re in charge, and you get to make the important decisions that affect you. You’ll also be able to make a positive impact on the community around you and meet new people every day.
Student demand has soared in ever greater numbers, teamed with a huge backlog in driving tests, we are still seeing record levels of new students wanting to learn to drive. Due to this and other factors, our industry is experiencing a dramatic national shortage of driving instructors.
Job satisfaction, seeing pupils pass their driving test and teaching them safe driving for life.
Making time for things outside of work is important. As a driving instructor, you can control your own hours and balance your life, enabling you to make positive changes to your life and increase your job satisfaction.
Earn between £30,000 – £65,000 a year
Pursue extra qualifications once you have qualified and go into more advanced instruction such as driving instructor training, fleet training, commercial, trailer towing, ambulance training & more
Part 1 comprises of a Theory and Hazard Perception test. You will be asked 100 questions from 4 different categories, and will need to achieve a minimum of 85 correct questions, and also pass each individual category. You are given a total of 90 minutes to complete this section of the test.
The second section tests your hazard perception skills. There are 14 video clips, one of which will contain 2 hazards. You must score at least 57 marks out of a possible 75, to pass this test.
There is no limit as to how many times you are allowed to take this test. After passing Part 1, you will be required to pass Part 2 and 3 within 2 years, or you will have to start at Part 1 again.
Part 2 is an advanced test of your driving ability. It lasts around 1 hour and includes an eyesight test, as well as general vehicle maintenance and safety questions. You will be given 1-2-1 in-car training, practising all manoeuvres and mock test routes. You are allowed to take this Part 2 exam up to a maximum of 3 times.
After passing your Part 2 exam, you have the opportunity to take a Trainee Licence, which allows you to put your skills into practice, and also allows you to ‘teach for reward’.
The Part 3 exam is a test of your instructional and teaching ability. A supervising examiner will assess your instructional techniques, instructor characteristics, and core competencies, by role playing 2 different types of pupils (Phase 1, a new or inexperienced pupil, and Phase 2, a more experienced pupil, or even a full licence holder).
As mentioned above, we at GSD know that Part 3 is the most difficult and requires the most time to prepare for, so we start Part 3 training at the outset. We do not have a limited amount of training hours and offer at least 2 training sessions per week.
You will be graded on a scale from 1-6, requiring at least a 4 to pass. Once you have passed Part 3, you will need to apply for your ‘green badge’, and will be placed on the register of approved driving instructors. We will supply you with pupils to get your earnings revved up as soon as possible!
